125 Hours of Tango History: Completing the Diplomatura with Instituto Argentino del Tango

I am immensely proud to share that I’ve successfully completed the “Diplomatura en Historia del Tango” (Diploma in Tango History), organized by the Instituto Argentino del Tango in Buenos Aires.

From June to December 2026, I spent 125 online hours (every Sunday evening + some more days) learning, listening, reading, and thinking about tango — all in Spanish. It was intense, sometimes demanding, and deeply rewarding.

What made this program truly special was the amazing group of teachers. We didn’t have just one lecturer, but many — and most of them are considered among the most knowledgeable people in their specific areas of tango history, music, and culture. Learning from researchers, historians, musicians, and long-time specialists gave me access to a depth of knowledge you don’t find in books alone. Each teacher opened a different door into tango.

We explored tango’s social and cultural roots, the evolution of the music, historical periods, orchestras, singers, and the broader context in which tango was born and transformed.

For me as a tango DJ, this wasn’t “just another course.” It changed how I hear tango. Every orchestra now feels more alive, every recording carries more meaning, and every tanda I build comes with more awareness of where this music comes from. History adds emotional and cultural depth to the way I play.

I’m incredibly grateful for this learning journey, for the chance to study in Spanish with Argentine teachers, and for the tons of new knowledge I gained. Tango keeps teaching me — and this diplomatura was a beautiful, demanding step on that path.
